Ms. Courtney was my Community specialist during the summer bridge program at Wayne State University. Ms. Courtney was helped me transition into college and dedicated her time to me along with many other students in the program. She brought joy and happiness to a new and scary time for me and I really appreciate all that she did for me. Every time that I saw her she always had a smile on her face and almost always greeted me with an enthusiastic “Hey Y’all.” I knew if I were to call or text she would answer or reply as soon as she could and helped work out any issues or concerns that I had. Overall I owe a lot to Ms. Courtney and after meeting her I know that I now have the skills to make it as a Wayne State Warrior.

During the Summer Bridge Program at Wayne State, Ms. Courtney was our Community Specialist. But in my eyes, she was much more than that. To the students, she was a friend, a sister and a mentor all in one. Even though the students had our own assigned advisors we could talk to, for some reason, it was easier to talk to Ms. Courtney when we needed a shoulder to cry on. One night, after curfew, Ms. Courtney noticed how upset I was and stopped to talk to me about it. We talked for about 10 minutes and she told me that it is okay to not be okay. It is perfectly fine to take a break and let out a good cry. She then reminded me of my strength and to always keep going, even when times get tough. To have met someone so supportive and encouraging like Ms. Courtney, makes me look forward to the future.
